EUROPEAN TRANSPLANT COORDINATORS ORGANIZATION (ETCO)
ETCO members are healthcare professionals, with different backgrounds, whose primary function is the work as a coordinator in the field of organ/tissue procurement and transplantation as well as those persons who are involved in facilitating organ/tissue recovery and transplantation or are associated with this field.
The European Transplant Coordinators Organization was set up in 1983.According to the house rules the major aim of this Foundation is to provide information on an international level to medical personnel, technicians and the general public concerning the benefits of organ transplantation. The Foundation will attempt to positively influence the increased procurement and utilization of transplantable tissue.
ETCO will disseminate information concerning advancements in the field of organ and tissue transplantation. This will be done through symposia and other avenues to be held periodically. Nowadays ETCO involves more than 400 members spread all over the world
National Key members Committee
Most of the European countries and some non-European countries are represented by a National Key Member (NKM) elected by democratic procedures, being the link between all ETCO members, the board & committees.
The Certification Committee of ETCO
The Certification Committee was established in 1999 during the 5th ETCO Congress in Oslo. The goal is to demonstrate an achieved level of competence in the field of transplant co-ordination based on experience and/or examination . 372 Coordinators have already been certified (CETC). Some of the future purposes of this Committee are the recognition of the Title by the CEO and EOEO members, consider Certification in the Quality Projects, a recertification process and facilitate Examination in different Languages. In order to emphasize the importance of the scientific activities of our organization, the ETCO Board developed some rules to support the activities of the Scientific Committee of ETCO. These bylaws define the role, the composition, and the commitments of the Scientific Committee. Moreover, some documents necessary for the organization of scientific activities of the Annual ETCO meetings, namely the design of the scientific programs and the evaluation of abstracts have also been defined.
The Educational Committee of ETCO
The Executive Board of ETCO also recognized the significance to give support to educational activities in the field of Transplant Coordination all around Europe. The terms and conditions for the ETCO grants were prepared and already applied to recognized educational Courses.
ETCO website
ETCO website (www.etco.org) has been recently completely redesigned. In terms of communication this was a major step forward. We have now an interactive webpage, providing detailed information about matters related with Transplant Coordination and the ETCO ongoing projects.
The Scientific Committee
In order to emphasize the importance of the scientific activities of our organization, a Scientific Committee was created during the meeting of Leuven. The ETCO Board developed some rules to support the activities of the Scientific Committee of ETCO. These bylaws define the role, the composition, and the commitments of the Scientific Committee. Moreover, some documents necessary for the organization of scientific activities of the Annual ETCO meetings, namely the design of the scientific programs and the evaluation of abstracts have also been defined.
Organs ans tissues the official Journal of ETCO
ORGANS and TISSUES is the official publication of ETCO (European Transplant Coordinators Organization) with the co-operation of other organizations (Deustsche Stiftung Orhantransplantation, Etablissement francais des Greffes, Hungarotransplant, Centro Nazionale Trapianti). The journal has been published with this title from 1997 when it replaced the ETCO Newsletter. The journal publishes articles about organ and tissue donation, sharing and transplantation. Its goal is to offer a service to national ETCO projects, to follow clinical and research activities and to develop education, communication and ethical aspects concerning organs and tissues.
