ABSTRACT: This is a brief critical review of the current epidemiological literature on liver transplant from a living donor. Few large epidemiological studies are available from both US and Europe, but the results on long term outcomes are not univocal. Survival after liver transplant from a living donor seems to be similar to that reported by the literature for classical transplants from cadaveric donors. However, organ survival may be less advantageous when liver transplant from a living donor is compared to transplantation from a cadaveric donor.
Survival data from a large study conducted in Pittsburgh (PA) are also presented and discussed.
