The ALLIANCE-O project white paper and future perspectives back

The main European transplant organizations actively took part to ALLIANCE-O, a project financed by the European Commission that aimed at setting up further cooperation and coordination in European national reseach programs to fight the key and broad issue of organ shortage. At the end of the project partners and the European Commission wrote a white paper with recommendations and proposals for future actions within common and agreed strategies and policies.

Many of the proposals imply collaboration between member states. The main goal is to establish more powerful strategies through:

• a common definition of terms, it is mandatory to share experience and results

• a common approach in tools used for organisation, training, education, allocation, safety, quality and evaluation, in order to avoid duplication of work and save time.

Many of these tools already exist and have been developed by one or the other countries, and they must be better translated and disseminated. The improvement of the existing tools could also be shared to increase their pertinence and decrease the need for investments in each country. These proposals concern all steps of activity for heart beating and non-heart beating, living donors. Some of them are immediately applicable; some others require additional implementation work.
