Swisstransplant is the Swiss national foundation for organ donation and transplantation.
The foundation was created on the 4th March 1985.
The first donor cards were issued in 1987 and the co-ordination centre opened in 1992.
Swisstransplant is a non-profit-organisation.

Currently in Switzerland there is no federal legislation for organ donation & transplantation. The federal chambers have estimated in 1994 that a law for organ retrieval and transplantation was imperative at the federal level and a project for a constitutional article has been written. This article 119a of the federal Constitution adopted by the population and the cantons on 7th February 1999 will permit the federal legislator to decree prescriptions, which will be applied in the whole of Switzerland. This new law should be applied in 2007.
