Hungarotransplant News back
Hungarotransplant The main objective of Hungarotransplant has been to create an organisation with central coordination, harmonising, preparatory and operative tasks in all procedures related to organ, and later tissue, transplantation, to the benefit of all members of the society in Hungary, and with entering into contact with similar national organisations and international systems. The ultimate goal is for the agency is to increase the number and to improve the outcomes of organ transplantations in Hungary.

Hungarotransplant PSC, an agency of outstanding public interest, was founded in 2001 by the Minister of Health, upon authorisation of the Hungarian Government, with the task of enhancing and coordinating activities related to transplantation that are governed by ministerial decree on implementing the provisions of Act on Health concerning organ and tissue transplantation.
The organization has designed and operates a structure, which consists of Hungarotransplant's administrative and executive centre, and as part of it, of the National Coordinator's Centre. On the basis of the Spanish model Hungarotransplant has organized the national coordinators' network consisted of three levels. On the top, there is the National Coordinator's Centre with three national coordinators. In each transplantation centres in Szeged, Pécs and Debrecen two regional centre coordinators employed by Hungarotransplant assist the work of organ procurement and transplantation teams. In Budapest, three transplant coordinators employed by the medical university carry out similar work, in cooperation with the national coordinators of Hungarotransplant. On the third level of the network, in up to 30 donor hospitals, volunteer donation links are responsible locally for the detection and identification of all available potential donors. They work as full-time anesthesiologists at the ICU of the hospital.
Hungarotransplant started central operative coordination of transplantation activities as of 15 January 2002, i.e. the centralisation of donor referrals from across the country, which was a shift from the traditional regional approach. From this date onwards, Hungarotransplant PSC coordinated all organ donation and transplantation procedures in the whole country. By implementing different promoting activities, including the diagnostic tools of the international Donor Action program in Hungary, Hungarotransplant encourages hospitals to get involved into the process of donor detection and identification and improvement of professional skills in implementing local donation protocols.
Furthermore, the Ministry of Health delegated professional organisational duties to Hungarotransplant, which it has been carrying out on an ongoing basis; these duties include, for instance, the refinement and enforcement of a national set of agreed donation eligibility criteria. Upon request, it shall take part in the Ministry's other activities related to transplantation, including representation of the country at international forums and on professional committees. By organising training courses and continuing education programs, it shall make sure that there is a growing pool of professionals skilled in organ donation and transplantation.
Hungarotransplant is playing a proactive role in elaborating the criteria for international organ exchange and in the practical implementation of organ exchange: the first such program is to transplant Hungarian donor lungs in Vienna for Hungarian and other recipients. In order to enlarge its international cooperation network and pursuant to the provisions of the Government resolution, Hungarotransplant has initiated and engaged in negotiations with a view to collaborating similar organisations and to identifying practicalities of cooperation.
In the first years of its functioning, Hungarotransplant PSC carried out its activities in the fields of coordination, promoting organ donation, training, communication, research and international networking.
